Article Icon 1Multiple Fires Prompt Evacuations

Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park was evacuated Thursday as crews worked to contain two fires on the park’s southern and northern rims.

The South Rim Fire quickly grew to over 3,000 acres, with 0% containment reported Saturday evening. A smaller blaze on the park’s North Rim was largely extinguished by Friday. Both were reportedly ignited by lightning.

Evacuations were also ordered Thursday north of Buena Vista due to the Mountain View Fire, which destroyed two homes before it was mostly contained Friday night. Its cause is not yet known.

On Sunday, Gov. Polis issued a disaster declaration for the South Rim Fire and three others on the Western Slope, all reportedly sparked by the same weather event. See a map of active fires here.

Article Icon 1Mother, Daughter Sell Cookies for Flood Relief

Days after deadly flash floods devastated Camp Mystic, a girls’ summer camp in Texas, a mother-daughter duo in Colorado is doing all they can to help.

Hillary Conway is a former Mystic camper and counselor. Her daughter, Alice Rose, had just returned from her sixth summer at the camp a week before the floods hit.

When they heard about the disaster, the Conways decided to raise money by baking and selling Tweety Cookies—a secret recipe and camp tradition handed down by Mystic co-owner Tweety Eastland.

The pair has raised over $10,000 for the camp so far. They are still accepting donations. Hillary plans to send the money to Camp Mystic this week.
