Funeral Home Owner Sentenced

A judge on Friday sentenced Jon Hallford, a Penrose funeral home co-owner who pleaded guilty to nearly 200 counts of corpse abuse, to 40 years in state prison.

Prosecutors said Hallford and his ex-wife, Carie, stashed about 190 bodies in a decrepit building and sent bereaved families fake ashes. In two cases, the wrong body was buried.

At the hearing, families of the deceased asked for a 50-year sentence, the maximum under Hallford’s revised plea deal. A judge last year rejected the original deal, ruling that a sentence of up to 20 years was too lenient.

The Hallfords have separately pleaded guilty to defrauding the government of nearly $900,000 in pandemic aid. Jon Hallford received a 20-year sentence in that case.

Carie Hallford’s sentencing for fraud is March 16. She’ll be sentenced for the corpse abuse charges April 24.

Pope Appoints New Denver Archbishop

Pope Leo XIV has appointed Bishop James R. Golka, current Bishop of the Diocese of Colorado Springs, to become the next Archbishop of Denver.

Golka, 59, succeeds Archbishop Samuel J. Aquila, who led the Archdiocese of Denver for 14 years. Aquila submitted his request to retire last September on his 75th birthday, as required by canon law.

As Archbishop of Denver, Golka will oversee more than 600,000 Catholics in Colorado’s largest Catholic diocese. He’s scheduled to be formally installed during a March 25 Mass.

Golden Retrievers Take Over Golden

Thousands of golden retrievers, dog owners, and fans of the breed gathered in Golden on Saturday for Goldens in Golden, an annual celebration of International Golden Retriever Day. See video here.

Founded in 2019, Goldens in Golden is considered the largest gathering of golden retrievers in the world. After last year’s record-breaking turnout, organizers expanded the festival’s footprint, extended its hours, and added free, dog-friendly shuttles.

Attendees came from all over the state, country, and world. The massive influx of visitors gave a much-needed boost to local businesses during an otherwise slow time of the year.
