Morphew Under House Arrest

A judge has ordered murder suspect Barry Morphew confined to his home at all times after reviewing video of an alleged hit-and-run in Denver last week.

District Court Judge Amanda Hopkins issued the order Wednesday out of Alamosa after a concerned citizen emailed her about a news report on the Aug. 26 incident.

The woman whose car was struck said the driver would not give his name or insurance information and offered her $300 in cash before leaving.

Hopkins ordered Morphew’s GPS monitoring company to hand over its monthly report, and it didn’t comply. A hearing on the alleged bond violation is expected next week.

Morphew is set to go on trial next year for the alleged murder of his wife, Suzanne, whose remains were found more than three years after she went missing in Chaffee County.

CPW Defends Wolf Citation

Colorado Parks and Wildlife is defending its decision to fine a hunter roughly $140 for fatally shooting a collared wolf he mistook for a coyote in January.

Director Laura Clellan told commissioners in La Junta on Wednesday that citing a rules violation rather than a law kept the case out of court.

A statutory citation would have triggered an automatic summons and possible penalties of up to $100,000 and a year in jail, at the discretion of the district attorney.

Advocates say the outcome sets a bad precedent, and staff at a wolf center in Divide have called for harsher penalties. The hunter also got five suspension points.
