CDOT Trains for I-70 Tunnel Emergencies

CDOT crews are conducting regular firefighting training at the Eisenhower-Johnson Memorial Tunnel as officials prepare for increased fire risk along the I-70 corridor. The specialized team is tasked with responding quickly to vehicle fires, accidents, and potential wildfires in and around the tunnels.

The 22-person crew operates year-round, balancing maintenance duties with emergency response, and works alongside local fire agencies in Clear Creek and Summit counties.

Officials say the tunnel environment presents unique challenges, requiring rapid response to prevent fires from spreading in confined spaces.

With low snowpack and dry conditions raising wildfire concerns, crews are increasing mitigation efforts. CDOT officials say the goal is to ensure immediate response capability in one of Colorado’s busiest and most critical mountain routes.

Wounded Soldier Returns Home to Teller County

A U.S. Army major injured in a drone attack in Kuwait has returned home and will be honored this week in Teller County. Maj. Stephen Ramsbottom was wounded during a March 1 attack while inside a command center.

Ramsbottom said he and his team were preparing to leave areas they believed could be targeted when the drone hit, describing the incident as one of the most difficult days of his life. He returned to Cripple Creek last week and is continuing his recovery.

Local officials recognized Ramsbottom at a county commissioners meeting Thursday morning. The event marked his return and service following the overseas attack.

Denver’s Haunted Mansion Gets Tenants

The Peabody-Whitehead Mansion in Denver’s Capitol Hill has been converted into eight apartments after a $3 million, 13-year renovation.

Built in 1889 by the architect of the Brown Palace, the property once housed Gov. James Peabody and later served as a boarding house, nightclub, and restaurant.

Developer Ira Wertenteil preserved the building’s historic structure while incorporating artifacts tied to its past, including items inspired by original owner Dr. William Riddick Whitehead, a surgeon. The mansion has long been tied to ghost stories, though current ownership says it has not reported experiencing any paranormal activity.

Units are now leasing for roughly $3,200 to $3,800 a month, with tenants moving in as of April.
