Article Icon 1Second Dean Shot by Student Sues DPS

Eric Sinclair, the former dean of culture at East High School, has filed a lawsuit against Denver Public Schools (DPS) after he and another dean were shot by a student in 2023.

The other dean, Jerald “Wayne” Mason, filed a lawsuit earlier this month. Mason and Sinclair were shot by the student multiple times while conducting a routine pat down.

In his lawsuit, Sinclair argues the district’s policies led to the shooting, as DPS pressed schools to admit students with criminal records and provided deficient de-escalation training.

The lawsuit also says DPS “prioritized politics and statistics over safety.” In 2020, DPS voted to remove all student resource officers, a decision that was reversed after the 2023 shooting.

Article Icon 1Denver Rejects Salvation Army Contract

Denver City Council has rejected a nearly $3 million contract for homeless services with the Salvation Army amid concerns of safety in the organization’s shelters.

Several former case managers have spoken out about the shelters’ safety issues, such as a lack of security and the presence of drugs and weapons.

On March 21, a staff member at the 4040 Quebec St. shelter—where a double homicide occurred last year—was arrested for sexually assaulting a guest at the location.

Frustrated by the latest incident, council members voted down a contract to expand the program’s services over three years, which one member said would be “irresponsible” in light of its history.

The Cherry Creek School District (CCSD) is set to contribute $15 million to a multi-use stadium, fields, and facilities for the new National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) team.

The facility, sited on a 43-acre plot in Centennial, would serve as the team’s temporary stadium from 2026 to 2028 while its long-term venue at the Santa Fe Yards is under construction.

CCSD’s contribution comes from a voter-approved bond fund, which can only be used for capital construction projects. Besides the $15 million, the district will split design and construction costs with the team.

In return, CCSD receives a number of perks, including use of the playing fields, opportunities for students and athletes, a $100,000 donation to the Cherry Creek Schools Foundation, and 500 tickets per season.
