Article Icon 1Weiser Outlines Priorities

Gov.-elect Phil Weiser said Wednesday the legislature may need to make adjustments to ballot measures voters approved, including a fentanyl sentencing measure and two initiatives related to transgender youth.

He named former Interior Secretary Ken Salazar, former Gov. Roy Romer, and former Denver Mayor Federico Peña to lead his transition team. He takes office as Colorado’s 44th governor on Jan. 12.

His priorities include data centers, social media, and youth jobs. He plans to limit data centers and sign a bill Gov. Jared Polis vetoed that targets platforms selling drugs and guns to kids.

Weiser called the state budget his most immediate challenge. He said he wants to hear from a legislative committee studying Medicaid before deciding on changes to Polis’s budget proposal.

Article Icon 1Three More Amendments Rejected

Colorado voters rejected Amendment 82, which would have created a constitutional right for consumers to buy natural gas and for utilities to sell it to homes and businesses.

Voters also turned down the hunting and fishing amendment, which would have named hunting and fishing the preferred way to manage Colorado’s fish and wildlife populations.

Amendment 83 was backed by national hunting groups. Major opposition donors included the Center for a Humane Economy, the Sierra Club, and a nonprofit linked to Gov. Jared Polis.

Amendment 81 also failed. It would have required police to notify ICE when someone in custody is charged with a violent crime or has a prior felony and is in the country illegally.

Article Icon 1Farmer’s Almanac Releases Christmas Forecast

The Old Farmer’s Almanac released its white Christmas forecast, predicting at least an inch of snow on the ground Christmas Day in the Northeast, the Intermountain region, and Alaska.

The forecast splits Colorado in two, calling for a white Christmas in the western half and the mountains and only a chance in the Denver metro and on the eastern plains.

Colorado’s ski towns historically have a 94% to 99% chance of snow on the ground on Christmas. Denver’s odds are much lower, at about 40%.

For now, winter weather advisories covered parts of the central mountains this week, while Denver expects sunshine and highs about 10 degrees above normal into next week.
