Article Icon 1Voters Approve, Reject Ballot Measures

Front Range voters approved Ballot Issue 7A, a 0.333% sales tax expected to raise about $295 million a year for the CoCo passenger train from Pueblo to Fort Collins.

Proposition NN passed, ending TABOR refunds for the foreseeable future so the state can keep billions more each year. Analysts estimate schools would get about $241 million next year.

Voters rejected Amendment 84, the AP projected. It would have required the last four digits of a Social Security, driver’s license, or state ID number on mail ballot envelopes.

Amendment 87, which would replace the flat income tax with a graduated system, held a narrow lead as of Wednesday. Proposition 136, which would cap the rate at 4.4%, was trailing.

Meanwhile, Colorado Democrats won supermajorities in both legislative chambers, with a projected 24-11 Senate and up to a 49-16 House. That lets them override vetoes and refer amendments without GOP votes.

Article Icon 1Anchor Failure Blamed in Climbers’ Deaths

Two Colorado Mountain College students found dead in Chaffee County died after a catastrophic anchor failure while rappelling, authorities said Tuesday.

Kaden Matsuda, 19, of Ridgway, and Jackson Donlon, 20, of Queensbury, New York, died instantly of blunt force injuries, according to an autopsy.

The pair left the college’s Leadville campus for a weekend trip and appear to have switched from Ice Mountain to nearby West Apostle Mountain, where they were found.

Officials said the cause of the anchor failure is unknown, but the snowstorm was not a direct factor. Sheriff Andy Rohrich said there is relief that neither student suffered.

Article Icon 1Storm Brings Snow, Rain

Another storm moved into Colorado yesterday, with a Winter Weather Advisory for the Central Mountains calling for up to 10 inches of snow above 10,000 feet by this morning.

In southern Colorado, rain was expected along I-25 Wednesday evening, while Woodland Park could see up to 2 inches of snow, with slick spots possible in Teller County Thursday morning.

Denver sat on the system’s northeastern edge, with mostly cloudy skies and a few showers possible. Suburbs south and southwest of the city had a better chance of precipitation.

Drier weather returns later today with highs in the mid-50s on the plains, and Denver could see highs in the 60s this weekend under mostly sunny skies.
