Sewage Spill Reaches Reservoir

More than 4 million gallons of untreated sewage poured into the Arkansas River at Pueblo last week after a patch on a wastewater pipe failed inside a stormwater discharge line.

The plume reached John Martin Reservoir near Las Animas today. Colorado Parks and Wildlife told visitors to avoid swimming, wading, fishing, and other water contact.

Pueblo County testing found extremely high E. coli levels downstream, and officials warned people, pets, and livestock away from the river as far east as Las Animas.

The park was already under a yellow caution for toxic blue-green algae, and neighboring Lake Hasty stays closed to full-body contact after its most recent test.

CMV Distracted-Driving Crashes Decrease

Colorado State Patrol (CSP) troopers investigated 316 crashes involving commercial trucks and distracted driving last year, down 6.5% from 2024.

Most of those wrecks caused only property damage, though 60 of them resulted in injury or death, about 19% of the annual total.

CSP said the decline correlates with Colorado’s hands-free law, which took effect at the start of 2025, alongside enforcement, education, and shifting driver behavior.

Interstate truckers caught driving distracted can be fined up to $2,750, and repeat offenses bring disqualification or out-of-service status for as long as 120 days.

Bear Spotted Roaming Loveland School

A bear cub turned up outside B.F. Kitchen Elementary School in southwest Loveland early Monday, circling the building and peering through the doors before students arrived.

Thompson School District placed the campus on a secure perimeter, locking exterior doors while staff met families at the entrances and moved students inside quickly.

The perimeter lifted at the start of the school day once the cub wandered off campus. Colorado Parks and Wildlife said the animal has not been seen since.

Wildlife officials call this an unprecedented year for bear conflicts, with more than 6,000 reports statewide as drought thins the natural food supply ahead of denning.
