Nevada Sues over Colorado River Cuts

Nevada became the first state to sue over the Colorado River’s future on Monday, asking a federal court to set aside the Interior Department’s new management plan.

The suit landed three days after federal officials released a plan for Lakes Mead and Powell that imposes 1.25 million acre-feet of mandatory cuts on downstream states alone.

Gov. Joe Lombardo said southern Nevada could lose more than 70% of its allocation while Colorado, Utah, New Mexico, and Wyoming are not required to contribute a drop.

Colorado’s negotiators declined to comment on the filing, which says upstream states used about 4.3 million acre-feet a year recently out of a 7.5 million acre-foot share.

Two Troopers Shot near Woodland Park

Two Colorado State Patrol troopers were shot around 7:15 a.m. Tuesday while trying to pull over a driver on Highway 24 west of Woodland Park in Teller County.

One trooper’s wounds were described as serious and the other’s as minor, and both were taken to a hospital for treatment. Neither has been identified.

The Teller County Sheriff’s Office said a man fired at the troopers’ vehicles, then drove off in a blue Subaru Impreza with plates hidden behind tinted covers.

Later that day, deputies located and fatally shot the suspect in an exchange of gunfire at a local woman’s home.

Loveland Artist Donates Statue to White House

A bronze Thomas Jefferson signing the Declaration of Independence now sits in the remade White House Rose Garden, a gift from Loveland sculptor George Lundeen.

Lundeen made the piece decades ago and kept it at his ranch before deciding to send it to Washington for July’s celebrations of the country’s 250th birthday.

It arrived late, stuck on a truck amid heavy security, but President Trump saw photos, liked it, and left Lundeen a voicemail of thanks that his office manager insisted he hear.

The statue joins figures of George Washington, Alexander Hamilton, and Benjamin Franklin on the white stone patio that replaced the garden’s lawn.
