Lightning Strike Kills 1, Injures 4

A teenage boy was killed and four other people were injured by lightning on Mount Blue Sky on Sunday afternoon.

Investigators said the person killed was a minor and that another juvenile was among the injured, with one victim airlifted off the 14,265-foot summit and three others treated for minor injuries at the scene.

A verified GoFundMe identified the teen who died as 15-year-old Levi Strobel of Erie. According to the family, his younger brother Jace, the victim flown to a hospital, improved overnight.

Wolf Dies in Northwest Colorado

Colorado Parks and Wildlife is investigating the death of an uncollared wolf in northwest Colorado.

The cause of death and the exact location were not released, and an agency spokesperson said no additional details were available.

The death marks the fifth Colorado wolf mortality this year and the 15th since the state began reintroducing gray wolves in December 2023.

Earlier 2026 deaths include a female wolf in January, an uncollared wolf killed for chronic depredation, and both breeding adults of the King Mountain Pack.

Big Boy No. 4014 Stops in Colorado

Union Pacific’s Big Boy No. 4014, the world’s largest operating steam locomotive, is making three Colorado stops this week as part of a coast-to-coast tour marking America’s 250th anniversary.

The locomotive stopped Monday at the Young Street crossing in Kit Carson and the Monroe Street crossing in Strasburg, and its final Colorado appearance is a Wednesday stop in Greeley at the 10th Street crossing from 1:15 to 2 p.m.

The train typically makes a stop in Denver, but this year it will be on the rails in the city only for a private Union Pacific employee event.

Spectators are asked to stay 25 feet back from the tracks, where they can also see a commemorative locomotive bearing the emblem of the America250 Semiquincentennial Commission.
