Article Icon 1Dry Creek Fire Prompts Evacuations

A fast-moving wildfire in Garfield County has burned at least 315 acres, destroying one home and one outbuilding since igniting Tuesday afternoon south of Rifle.

Evacuation orders remained in effect Wednesday for Grass Mesa Road north of Gage Road, Sunset Lane, and Gage Road north of mile marker 1, while pre-evacuation notices were in place for Grass Mesa Road south of Rodeo Drive and Coyote Trail.

Management of the fire transferred to a Type 3 team with the Upper Colorado River Interagency Fire Management Unit, bringing additional specialized resources to the scene.

Smoke from fires in neighboring states, particularly Utah, has also blanketed the Grand Valley in unhealthy air. Garfield County moves into Stage 2 Burn Restrictions on Friday.

Article Icon 1Douglas County Restricts E-Bikes

Douglas County commissioners unanimously passed an emergency ordinance Tuesday restricting electric dirt bikes and e-motorcycles on public roads, trails, and sidewalks, citing a surge in dangerous riding by young people.

The ordinance takes effect immediately—commissioners waived the standard 30-day timeline—and carries fines of up to $1,000 for reckless or careless driving. Riders under 18 must wear a helmet.

The ordinance targets throttle-powered e-dirt bikes capable of speeds up to 75 mph, not standard pedal-assist e-bikes under 20 mph, and requires operators to carry a driver’s license and insurance.

Parents who knowingly allow children to ride illegally can face fines as well. Sheriff Darren Weekly said the goal is voluntary compliance and education, with school outreach planned for the fall.

Article Icon 1DIA Ranked Least, Most Stressful Airport

Earlier this month, Denver International Airport (DIA) landed at No. 7 on an injury law firm’s study of the least stressful airports in the U.S., rated on TSA wait times, on-time departure rates, lost luggage frequency, and Yelp scores.

This week, a separate analysis by Mozio, an airport transfer provider, ranked DIA the fifth-most stressful airport in America—with a stress score of 7.02 out of 10—citing heavy FAA traffic, flight delays, parking costs, and the near-downtown location.

On the most-stressful list, DIA trails only Chicago O’Hare (8.42), followed by LaGuardia (7.54), JFK (7.19), and Newark (7.19). Minneapolis-St. Paul earned the title of least stressful, appearing near the top of both studies.
