Article Icon 1 GEO Group Sues Colorado

GEO Group, a corporation that operates immigrant detention facilities nationwide, filed a lawsuit against the state Monday, seeking to block enforcement of a new law subjecting the facilities to regular health and safety inspections.

In its lawsuit, the company argues the law exceeds the state’s authority. “These provisions are preempted by federal law and impermissibly attempt to directly regulate and control federal immigration operations of the United States,” the suit contends.

Though the ICE detention center in Aurora is currently the only such center in the state, federal officials have eyed a dormant prison in Hudson for a new site, with GEO under contract for that operation.

The new law was one of the only immigration-related bills to make it through the legislative process this year.

A sailor has been placed in pretrial confinement in connection with the fatal shooting of a fellow sailor aboard the PCU John F. Kennedy.

Boatswain’s Mate Seaman Jesse Braswell, a Coloradan, was killed in the shooting, which took place around 5:15 a.m. Saturday. The Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS) responded Sunday.

Braswell enlisted in the Navy on Oct. 31, 2024, and was assigned to Kennedy in March 2025. The sailor in pretrial confinement hasn’t been identified.

NCIS is investigating to determine the circumstances of the death. No charges have been filed yet.

Article Icon 1 Fires Prompt Closures, Evacs

The Paradise Creek Fire ignited Tuesday afternoon, shutting down both directions of I-70 near Glenwood Springs for nearly five hours.

In Garfield County, the Spring Creek Fire prompted evacuation orders near New Castle, with windy conditions hampering firefighting crews across the Western Slope.

Colorado fire officials are warning of very high wildfire danger statewide through Thursday. Red flag warnings and fire weather watches cover most of the state as hot, dry, and gusty winds continue into the weekend.
