Colorado’s Drought Isn’t Over

Despite weeks of rain, Colorado’s severe drought continues to grip the state as climatologists warn that the “stage is set” for a dangerous wildfire season after a record-low snowpack year.

Colorado activated drought measures in March, but water restrictions have thus far yielded limited savings and reservoirs are about 10% less full than average for this time of year.

River flows are expected to stay critically low through July and August, hitting farmers and ranchers first, and spring storms alone cannot make up the deficit from the failed snowpack.

Meanwhile, Colorado Springs and Manitou Springs lifted burn restrictions amid near-daily rain, but officials continue urging caution as broader drought conditions persist.

Community Saves Jamestown’s General Store

Residents of Jamestown, a 300-person mountain town west of Boulder, rallied to save the Jamestown Mercantile, the town’s only commercial establishment.

Chef-owner Rainbow Shultz and four friends formed a nonprofit after the historic 1896 building hit the market for $1.5 million. Their 501(c)(3) secured exclusive rights to purchase the building in May, buying time to raise funds before an outside buyer could move in.

Jamestown remains marked by its 2013 flood recovery. Mercantile anchored a decade of rebuilding for the devastated community. “People can come in and drink water for six hours, listen to music, dance and meet their neighbors,” Shultz said.

The nonprofit’s goal is to purchase the building outright and keep the Merc in community hands for good.

Elway Joins Wallen at Mile High
