Statewide Ballot Measures Approved

State election officials this week approved three statewide ballot measures for the Nov. 3 election after verifying the required voter signatures.

Initiative 109 would prohibit children and college athletes from participating in gendered sports of the opposite biological sex. Initiative 110 would ban sex-change surgeries for minors, as well as restrict the use of public funds or insurance coverage to pay for those procedures.

Initiative 108 would increase penalties for child sex trafficking, potentially making it punishable by life in prison without parole. Protect Kids Colorado, a state issue committee, collected more than 125,000 voter signatures to get each question on the ballot.

Two measures already on the ballot would increase penalties for fentanyl-related felonies and require law enforcement to work more closely with federal immigration officials. See a list here.

Power Outage Hits DIA

Denver International Airport (DIA) lost power for about two hours Wednesday morning, triggering hundreds of flight delays in the midst of a spring break travel rush.

The outage began around 9:20 a.m., impacting restrooms, lights, escalators, moveable walkways, and the train to the gates. The FAA issued a ground stop affecting flights heading to Denver.

Some passengers shared photos of massive crowds stuck outside boarding areas. Others said they were unable to deboard planes or use airport restrooms during the outage.

Power was restored around 11 a.m., and operations began to resume. By then, more than 250 flights had been delayed, with more than 400 reported by early afternoon.

Walsenburg Water Partially Restored

Walsenburg, a city of about 3,000 south of Pueblo, remained under a boil advisory Wednesday as crews worked to fix leaks in the municipal water system.

Around 2 a.m. Friday, a line break caused the system’s pressure to plummet, leaving much of the city without running water. Local schools closed, state park showers opened to the public, and the city issued a seven-day disaster declaration.

In a March 18 update, officials said water pressure has been mostly restored to the city, and it’s now safe to shower, but a boil order is still in effect. Water must be boiled for one minute before drinking, food preparation, brushing teeth, or washing dishes.

The city’s aging infrastructure is complicating repair efforts and extending the outage, local leaders said. There’s currently no timeline for full-service restoration.
