A soldier stationed at Fort Carson has been identified as the seventh U.S. service member to die amid the ongoing U.S.-Israel military conflict with Iran.

Sgt. Benjamin N. Pennington, 26, of Glendale, Kentucky, died on Sunday, March 8, from injuries sustained during a March 1 enemy attack at Prince Sultan Air Base in Saudi Arabia.

Pennington was assigned to 1st Space Battalion, 1st Space Brigade, at Fort Carson, a military installation south of Colorado Springs. The Department of War said he’ll be posthumously promoted to staff sergeant.

Six service members were killed by an Iranian drone strike in Kuwait on March 1, one day after Operation Epic Fury began. Those soldiers were from the 103rd Sustainment Command based in Des Moines, Iowa.

Article Icon 1Erika Kirk Appointed to Air Force Board

Erika Kirk, widow of slain conservative Christian activist Charlie Kirk, has been appointed to the U.S. Air Force Academy Board of Visitors.

The Board of Visitors is a congressionally mandated oversight panel that monitors the morale, curriculum, instruction, and other matters related to the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs. Though it lacks direct authority, the board can make recommendations to the Secretaries of the Air Force and Defense.

Kirk’s appointment appeared to take place over the weekend, with no formal announcement. She was appointed by President Trump, who previously appointed Charlie Kirk to the board in March 2025.

The board may soon take up the issue of recommending that Charlie Kirk receive a posthumous honorary degree from the academy after the Association of Graduates referred the matter to the Board of Visitors last month.

The Front Range Passenger Rail District is asking the public to vote on the name of a new rail service that would run from Fort Collins to Pueblo.

Voters can choose from four finalists: Colorado Connector (CoCo), Colorado Ranger, Front Range Express Destinations (FRED), and RangeLink. Click here to vote.

The district wants to settle on a name before deciding whether to place a sales tax measure on the November ballot to help fund the route.

The survey is open through March 23. Voters will be entered into a raffle for two seats on the inaugural trip, currently slated for 2029.
