Question: Elbert County takes its name from what historical figure?

Answer: In 1873, President Ulysses S. Grant appointed Samuel Hitt Elbert, namesake of Elbert County, as the sixth Governor of the Colorado Territory. One of Elbert’s first acts as governor was tending to the arrival of President Grant, who that summer became the first sitting president to visit Colorado.
