SWAT Sgt. Intoxicated at Shooting Resigns

A Jefferson County SWAT sergeant admitted to being under the influence of alcohol when he responded to the Sept. 10 shooting at Evergreen High School, documents show.

An internal affairs investigation into SWAT Team Leader Sgt. Anthony Hamilton began about two weeks after the shooting, during which officers noted the smell of alcohol and strange behavior.

In a meeting with SWAT leadership, Hamilton said he drank “the better part of a 12-pack, so maybe 9 or 10” beers the morning of Sept. 10, one of his days off, and drove to the school despite being intoxicated and off duty because he “knew his team would need help.”

The sheriff’s office said the conduct “falls far outside” its standards and confirmed Hamilton has since resigned in lieu of termination.

Bennet Temporarily Blocks Trump Nominees

Sen. Michael Bennet, D-Colo., temporarily blocked the confirmation of 88 of President Trump’s nominees by invoking a rule that excludes cabinet-level picks from en bloc consideration.

Senate Republicans changed the rules earlier this year to allow mass confirmation by a simple majority vote. Under the rule change, certain senior-level positions must be considered individually.

Bennet objected to the inclusion of one such nominee—Sara Bailey, Trump’s drug czar—in the package set to be voted on Thursday. “I just blocked 88 Trump nominees from confirmation,” he said in a statement.

While his objection delayed the vote, Republicans used the opportunity to add more nominees, bringing the list to 97 and putting the Senate on track to confirm 420 in total.

CHSAA Settles with Districts on Trans Athletes

The Colorado High School Activities Association (CHSAA) has settled with several Colorado school districts over policies related to transgender students’ participation in school athletics.

School District 49 (D49) in Colorado Springs spearheaded the lawsuit in May to affirm newly implemented policies that separate school sports by biological sex.

According to D49, the settlement ensures CHSAA can’t penalize the districts for upholding biology-based athletics policies. CHSAA called the lawsuit unnecessary, citing its limited authority.

The remaining defendants, including Attorney General Phil Weiser, will try to dismiss the lawsuit in a hearing today. If it isn’t dismissed, the suit will continue in federal court.
