Article Icon 150 Cars Involved in I-70 Pileups

Two separate pileups involving dozens of vehicles occurred minutes apart on Interstate 70 Sunday morning as slick roads and low visibility snarled traffic in the high country.

Roughly 20 cars were involved in one multi-vehicle crash just before 11:30 a.m. in Eagle County. About 15 minutes later, a 30-car pileup occurred near the No Name exit east of Glenwood Springs.

No injuries were reported in either crash, though I-70 was closed in both directions for hours while the scenes were cleared. Icy and snow-covered roads lingered into Monday morning in southern Colorado, making for a slow post-holiday commute.

Another snowstorm arriving late tonight is expected to bring 2-4 inches of snow to the Denver area and at least 4 inches to the high country before it wraps up Wednesday afternoon.

Article Icon 1Wolves Edge Closer to Front Range

The latest wolf movement map released by Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) shows more translocated gray wolf activity along the Front Range than previous records.

According to the map, at least one collared wolf explored watersheds in central Boulder and northern Jefferson counties between Oct. 21 and Nov. 25. See the map here.

There are now roughly 20 collared wolves and four known packs in Colorado. CPW has said it expects wolves to expand across the state, including into the Front Range, over time.

CPW plans to release another round of wolves this January, but with both Canada and Washington ruled out as sources, the logistics remain uncertain.

JR’s Carriage Service is now offering free horse-drawn carriage rides in Grand Junction from noon to 3 p.m. every Saturday and Sunday until Christmas.

Belgian draft horses Sarah and Molly pull the carriage, picking up riders in front of Café Sol for a scenic, leisurely trip down Main Street. See a video here.

Owner Joseph Burtard says the rides, now a long-running tradition, give locals and visitors alike the chance to get in the holiday spirit while learning about horses and the Grand Valley’s history—two closely related topics.

Burtard hopes the free service also encourages passengers to linger, explore, and support small businesses along historic Main Street.
