Trump Admin Seeks to Move Tina Peters

The Federal Bureau of Prisons sent a letter to the Colorado Department of Corrections (DOC) last week requesting that former Mesa County Clerk Tina Peters be transferred to federal custody.

Peters is serving a nine-year sentence for breaching election data, an act she says was intended to uncover voter fraud. President Trump, unable to pardon Peters on state charges, has repeatedly called for her release.

While the agency didn’t explain its request, Peters’ legal team cited her health problems in state prison and her potential role as a witness in federal investigations into the 2020 election.

The DOC hasn’t said whether it will consider the request. Attorney General Phil Weiser said there’s no basis for the transfer and promised to “strongly oppose” the effort.

Polis Requests Flood Assistance

Gov. Jared Polis has requested a major disaster declaration from President Trump and the Federal Emergency Management Agency to support ongoing flood recovery efforts in southwestern Colorado.

The declaration would unlock federal funds to help La Plata, Archuleta, and Mineral counties recover and rebuild in the wake of historic floods, which caused more than $13 million in damage from Oct. 10 to 14.

The state issued its own disaster declaration Oct. 12 and has since increased maximum funding to $6 million.

The White House will decide whether to approve the request based on the level of damage. State staff are expected to work on recovery for at least six months.

New Memorial Honors Kendrick Castillo

Dozens gathered on Friday for the unveiling of a new memorial honoring Kendrick Castillo, an 18-year-old who died saving others in a 2019 shooting at STEM School Highlands Ranch.

Castillo was fatally shot when he and two classmates charged and restrained one of the two shooters in the attack. He was the only person killed in the shooting.

The seven-foot-tall stone monument in Civic Green Park is engraved with artwork and quotes reflecting Castillo’s faith, patriotism, and love of science. See a video here.

Douglas County funded the memorial via public donations, meeting a $30,000 goal in just a few days. It joins other tributes to Castillo, including Kendrick Castillo Way.
