Article Icon 1Judge Rejects Funeral Home Plea Deal

A Colorado judge on Monday rejected the plea deal of a funeral home owner accused of corpse abuse after families of the deceased argued the 15- to 20-year sentence was too lenient.

Carie Hallford had initially pleaded guilty, as had her husband, Jon, to stashing nearly 190 decaying bodies in a Penrose building while giving bereaved families fake ashes.

The rare plea-deal rejection follows a judge’s Sept. 12 decision to reject Jon Hallford’s plea agreement. Both have withdrawn their guilty pleas, setting the stage for trials next year.

The couple have separately pleaded guilty to fraud. Jon Hallford has already received a 20-year sentence in that case. Carie Hallford’s sentencing is in December.

Article Icon 1Drugmaker Sues State Over Price Cap

Amgen, a pharmaceutical company, is suing the Colorado Prescription Drug Affordability Board for setting a price cap on one of its prescription drugs.

The board voted last month to cap Enbrel, an arthritis and autoimmune disease medication, at $600 per dose. The limit is the first in the nation to cap the price of a prescription drug.

Amgen’s lawsuit argues the cap violates federal law. The company sued last year when the board first declared Enbrel unaffordable, but a federal judge threw out that case.

Legal experts say the lawsuit enters new legal territory and could set precedent for whether a state can limit drug prices despite federal patent protections.

Two friends stepped up to save the annual Christmas Mountain fireworks show in Salida after the city announced it wouldn’t be able to fund the beloved tradition.

Every year, Salida kicks off the holiday season by lighting a 750-foot Christmas tree outline on Tenderfoot Mountain, capped off with a fireworks finale.

When Michael Maassel and Erin Bridwell heard the city didn’t have the $10,000 needed for this year’s fireworks, they launched an online fundraising campaign and partnered with local sponsors to crowdfund the show.

Thanks to an outpouring of community support, they met their goal in just three weeks, allowing the fireworks show to go off as scheduled Nov. 28.
