Article Icon 1Colorado Springs Teachers Stage Strike

Hundreds of teachers in Colorado Springs School District 11 went on a one-day strike Wednesday to protest the loss of their collective bargaining power.

The strike, approved in May, follows the board’s decision in December to drop a decades-old master agreement between the teachers union and the district.

More than 1,000 demonstrators, including about a third of D-11’s 1,800 teachers, formed picket lines at campuses across the district, calling for the agreement to be restored.

Classes in the 22,000-student district remained in session, with substitutes and administrative staff filling in for the striking teachers.

Article Icon 1Clerk Accused of Embezzling Water Funds

A former town clerk in southern Colorado is facing felony charges for allegedly embezzling more than $26,000 in public funds intended for a critical water project.

Tyra Marie Avila, 47, served as clerk, treasurer, and administrator for Aguilar, a town of about 450 in Las Animas County, for 17 years. She resigned in September 2024.

In 2021, Aguilar received $5.7 million in federal loans and grants to build a reservoir. Investigators say Avila commingled those funds with the town’s general fund, then used the money for personal transactions and other town expenses, leaving contractors unpaid.

Avila posted a $15,000 bond after her arrest. The reservoir project remains incomplete, and the town has since implemented stricter financial controls to ensure it moves forward.

Ball Arena is rolling out fan-friendly pricing and local concession options ahead of the Avalanche’s home opener tonight.

Six Denver eateries will operate at the venue during the 2025-26 Nuggets and Avs seasons, selling everything from New York-style pizza to mini donuts. See a list here.

Additionally, classic stadium snacks—including hot dogs, pretzels, nachos, popcorn, and soda—will be sold for $5 each. Select 20-ounce domestic draft beers now cost $10.

The price cuts follow a nationwide trend among sports venues, while the new local vendors came in response to fan requests for Denver-area dining options, arena officials said.
