Xcel Settles Marshall Fire Lawsuit

Just one day before a trial would have begun, Xcel Energy agreed to settle a massive lawsuit from victims of the 2021 Marshall Fire, Colorado’s most destructive wildfire.

More than 4,000 plaintiffs argued Xcel caused one of the two fires that merged on Dec. 30, 2021, into the Marshall Fire, which destroyed over 1,000 homes and buildings, killed two people, and caused $2 billion in damage.

A two-year investigation traced one ignition to a trash burn and the other to an Xcel power line. Plaintiffs accused Xcel of negligence, while Xcel has denied that its line started the fire.

On Wednesday, Xcel agreed to pay a $640 million settlement without admitting any fault. Attorneys believe much of the settlement will go to home and property owners.

Regulators Move to Limit ‘Air Toxics’

Colorado’s Air Quality Control Commission voted last week to set health-based standards for the industrial emission of five substances defined as “air toxics.”

The pollutants, linked to cancer and other health problems, come from sources like oil and gas wells, industrial plants, medical device factories, and wastewater-management systems.

While praising the milestone vote, advocates criticized the governor-appointed board for adopting a set of higher non-cancer risk thresholds proposed by industry groups.

The standards still need to be approved by lawmakers. The AQCC hasn’t decided how to implement them, and they won’t be used in permitting or regulations for at least another year.

Two Universities Crack Top 100

U.S. News & World Report’s latest annual ranking of the country’s universities includes nine Colorado schools, two of which land in the top 100. See a list here.

The Colorado School of Mines in Golden came in at No. 80—making it the top Colorado school on the list—with high scores in undergraduate engineering programs, innovation, and veteran support.

The University of Colorado Boulder ranked No. 97 overall and No. 46 among public schools. Several of its engineering programs placed in the top 25, including aerospace at No. 10.

The University of Denver and Colorado State University were ranked at No. 117 and No. 151, respectively, followed by other schools in Denver, Colorado Springs, and Greeley.
