Students Walk Out to Protest Gun Violence

High school students across Colorado staged walkouts Wednesday to protest gun violence, one week after the shooting at Evergreen High School.

Walkouts took place in Broomfield, Conifer, Colorado Springs, Denver, and Highlands Ranch. The activist group Students Demand Action, joined by state representatives, also hosted a rally at the Capitol.

At Mesa Ridge High School, students walked out in protest of the Evergreen shooting and a separate incident on their own campus, where two classmates were arrested for bringing a pistol and an airsoft gun to school.

On Monday, a walkout at Thompson Valley High School in Loveland was cut short after threats were made against participating students. Police are still investigating.

Schools in Jefferson County, where the Evergreen shooting occurred, held walkouts last Friday.

Massive Search Underway for Missing Hunters

A search-and-rescue effort involving ground teams, search dogs, drones, and local volunteers is underway to find two missing hunters in Conejos County.

According to the sheriff’s office, Andrew Porter, 25, of Asheville, North Carolina, and Ian Stasko, 25, of Salt Lake City, Utah, disappeared during an elk hunting trip near Trujillo Meadows Reservoir, just north of the New Mexico border.

The hunters’ families last heard from them Thursday, Sept. 11, when storms moved into the area. On Saturday, deputies found their car at the nearby Rio De Los Pinos Trailhead, with camping gear and backpacks still inside.

As of Wednesday, both men are still missing. The families set up a GoFundMe to help with the search and are offering a $10,000 reward to anyone who can find them.

Voting Open in ‘Coolest Thing’ Contest

Voting is now open for the fourth annual Coolest Thing Made in Colorado People’s Choice Award, a competition celebrating Colorado’s inventions.

The contest has been held by the Colorado Chamber of Commerce since 2022. A water purification system, an off-road wheelchair attachment, and a Lockheed Martin spacecraft have won in past years.

This year’s 10 finalists include a self-driving mini tractor, the first aero-electric travel trailer, a low-orbit satellite, and the Laser Maze Challenge, an interactive attraction by Longmont’s Funovation.
