Question: What is the only Colorado county named after a fictional character?
Answer: Montrose County, like the city of Montrose, takes its name from the eponymous character in Sir Walter Scott’s 1819 novel A Legend of Montrose. Joe Selig, the prospector who founded Montrose in 1882, chose the name after a series of discarded ideas that included “Pomona” and “Dad’s Town.”
