Article Icon 1Suspects Try to Ram, Flee ICE

One suspect is in custody, and one remains at large after two illegal immigrants allegedly tried to run over ICE officers north of Colorado Springs on Thursday.

In a statement on Friday, ICE said the men tried to ram a vehicle into officers during an enforcement operation in Black Forest. One officer fired three shots into the vehicle, after which the two fled and abandoned the car.

While ICE arrested the passenger on Thursday, the other suspect, Jose Mendez-Chavez, remains at large. According to ICE, Mendez-Chavez has been deported six times and is a convicted child abuser.

In its announcement, ICE criticized the Colorado Rapid Response Network, an anti-ICE group that disrupts immigration raids, blaming it for an 830% increase in assaults on officers.

Other laws include changes to wild horse management, online marketplace regulations, and an effort to remedy teacher shortages.

Waste Connections of Colorado is collaborating with Louisville-based tech company AMP to build a first-of-its-kind AI-powered recycling facility in Commerce City.

The facility will use AMP’s AI vision and robotic automation to sort up to 62,000 tons of recycling per year, a process normally done by hand. See a video of the technology here.

According to AMP, the AI system is cheaper, safer, and more efficient. It reduces the need for hazardous manual labor and continuously fine-tunes the sorting process to increase output.

Waste Connections broke ground on the plant last week and plans to open it in 2026. The company estimates its investment in the facility at $50 million.
