Article Icon 1USDA to Relocate Jobs to Fort Collins

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced Thursday that it will move thousands of its employees in Washington, D.C., to five hubs across the country, including one in Fort Collins.

Around 2,600 USDA employees, more than half its D.C. workforce, will relocate to offices in Fort Collins as well as locations in North Carolina, Missouri, Indiana, and Utah. See a map here.

In a statement, the USDA said the reorganization will cut costs while putting regulators closer to farmers and ranchers. The transition is expected to take several months.

While Colorado lawmakers and cattlemen praised the decision, critics argue it could weaken the USDA’s connection to Congress and open the door to further workforce reductions.

All 173 passengers and six crew members were evacuated from an American Airlines flight at Denver International Airport (DIA) on Saturday after the plane’s landing gear malfunctioned shortly before takeoff.

The flight was bound for Miami when passengers heard a loud “boom” as the plane sped down the runway, causing some to panic as the pilot aborted takeoff.

American Airlines says the plane experienced a “maintenance issue” with its tire and landing gear, and everyone on board safely exited. A video shows flames and smoke coming from a tire as passengers used the emergency slide.

Five people were evaluated for minor injuries, and one was hospitalized. The FAA is currently investigating the incident.

A wildlife crossing on Interstate 25 (I-25) in Douglas County is now halfway complete. It’s ahead of schedule and under budget, the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) said Friday.

The Greenland Wildlife Overpass, located at milepost 165.4 of I-25, is set to become the largest wildlife overpass in the world, covering roughly 80,000 square feet and spanning six lanes of traffic.

The overpass will allow big game such as elk, mule deer, and pronghorn to safely cross I-25. CDOT expects it to reduce wildlife collisions by up to 90% in the area, which averages about one per day.

Though initially priced at $30 million, officials now say the project will cost between $15 million and $20 million. Construction began early this year and is expected to finish by December.

Dear Flyover Reader,

There’s never been a more important time to support The Colorado Flyover.

We’ve got a big announcement coming in a week, and I think you’re going to love it.

In fact, this is the last time we’ll ask for your direct support for a while.

Why?

I can’t say yet, but I can tell you that we could use a boost heading into the announcement. The Flyover family of email publications has grown from a scrappy startup to a new force in the news media landscape, and that’s all because of your support. Now, we’re ready to take things to the next level.

If you’d like to give directly to the news source that’s truly unbiased—that’s for you instead of against you, as the mainstream media typically is, this is your last chance for quite a while.

I can’t wait for you to find out about our plans for the future (look for a special message from our Founder next Monday), and I would very much appreciate your donation today.
