Article Icon 1Galligan Case Prompts Calls for Change

Community members gathered outside the Arapahoe County Justice Center on Wednesday, demanding legislative change in the wake of a controversial kidnapping case.

Solomon Galligan, 34, is accused of attempting to abduct an 11-year-old boy at an Aurora elementary school in 2024. Earlier this month, defense attorneys filed a motion to dismiss charges after Galligan was found mentally incompetent and not restorable.

Galligan, a registered sex offender, has had four criminal cases dismissed due to incompetence. In this case, prosecutors say their hands are tied by a recent change to state competency law.

Critics of the law say it lets dangerous offenders avoid trial, putting public safety at risk. Though Galligan will be civilly committed, such commitments typically last 12 months at most.

Article Icon 1CPW: Wolves Killed by Mountain Lion, Trap

Wildlife officials have determined the causes of death for two translocated gray wolves killed in Colorado this year.

A female wolf found dead in Rocky Mountain National Park on April 20 died of injuries from a mountain lion attack, according to Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW).

Another female wolf died on May 15 from injuries caused by a lawful foothold trap used for coyote control. Though the trap was placed legally, CPW issued a statewide suspension on certain 30-day trap permits in light of the incident.

Six of the 15 wolves reintroduced in January have died so far. Officials are still investigating the death of a male wolf on May 31.

Article Icon 1Colorado Infrastructure Gets C- Grade

The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) gave Colorado a C- for infrastructure, slightly below the national grade of C in a 2025 “report card” released Wednesday.

The report evaluates 14 types of infrastructure. While Colorado’s overall grade didn’t change from the last report, conducted in 2020, it scored lower this year in aviation, energy, and roads.

According to ASCE, 34% of Colorado’s roads are in good condition, compared to 45% nationally. The report cites population growth, extreme weather, and aging assets as the state’s top infrastructure challenges.

To improve the grade, ASCE recommends investing in assets, prioritizing resilience, bolstering intergovernmental partnerships, and engaging communities as stakeholders. See the full report here.
