Article Icon 1Copper Creek Pack Kills Again

The Copper Creek Pack, Colorado’s first pack of reintroduced gray wolves, killed a calf at McCabe Ranch on July 19, Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) confirmed.

This is the pack’s eighth confirmed kill this year. CPW moved the pack to Pitkin County in January after it was tied to repeated livestock depredations in Grand County.

On July 18, the CPW Commission narrowly approved a payment of $100,045 to rancher Conway Farrell, who claimed the pack’s depredations cost him 89 calves in 2024. Farrell previously received $287,408 for losses attributed to the pack.

Three other packs formed in western Colorado this spring. CPW says it’s in talks to acquire more wolves for a release in January 2026.

Members of the Aurora community held a candlelight vigil outside the Aurora Municipal Center on Sunday, 13 years after the mass shooting at a local theater took 12 lives.

The vigil featured 12 crosses with photographs of the victims and messages from the community. A display of 70 paper cranes honored those injured in the tragedy.

Earlier in the day, Dylan Boxer, a survivor of the shooting, helped organize a blood drive at the Century Aurora Theater. Organizers said the donations collected could help save more than 50 lives.

In addition to Sunday’s vigil, the 7/20 Memorial Foundation will host a Day of Resilience this coming Saturday.

The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) and Bicycle Colorado have launched a summer safety campaign aimed at curbing a rising number of bicycle fatalities.

According to CDOT, bicyclist deaths in the state have risen by 8% since 2015, with nearly half occurring during the summer months.

To educate the public, CDOT placed dozens of signs in Denver’s Washington Park. The signs display crash statistics and remind drivers of the Three-Foot Law, which requires passing drivers to give bicyclists at least three feet of space.

The campaign in Washington Park is expected to last through the summer. CDOT hopes to expand it to other urban areas across the state.
