Article Icon 1Report Sheds Light on CBI Mismanagement

Officials released the results of an independent audit of the Colorado Bureau of Investigation’s (CBI) forensics unit on Tuesday.

Focusing on practices from 2022 to 2024, the 105-page review found the unit suffered from poor management, inadequate accountability, and a fear-based internal culture.

CBI commissioned the report after Yvonne “Missy” Woods, a CBI analyst, was charged with misconduct for allegedly mishandling DNA in more than 1,000 cases.

The report makes 52 recommendations for improvement, including establishing the lab as an independent division separate from criminal investigations to boost autonomy and transparency.

A state court judge last week rejected a bid by Save the Poudre to overturn Thornton’s permit for a key water pipeline through Larimer County.

The Thornton Water Project is a $485 million pipeline that will deliver water from rights on the Poudre River to accommodate growth in Thornton. A permit for the 10-mile segment in Larimer County was approved in 2024.

In its challenge, Save the Poudre argued that county commissioners failed to consider an alternative that would route the water down the river to minimize environmental impact.

On July 3, Judge C. Michelle Brinegar ruled the board conducted a proper review, clearing the way for construction to continue. Officials estimate the pipeline could be operational by 2027.

Article Icon 1Nederland to Buy Eldora

The town of Nederland will purchase the nearby Eldora Mountain Resort from its current owner, Powdr, town officials announced Tuesday.

Though the purchase price is confidential, projections last year ranged from $100 to $200 million. Nederland will buy the resort without using tax dollars and will instead issue municipal bonds repaid by resort revenue.

The town will run Eldora in partnership with 303 Ski, a Front Range coalition of ski industry experts. In its FAQ, Nederland said it aims to turn the resort into a year-round, community-driven destination.

The deal could close as soon as October, one month before the resort opens for its 2025-26 ski season.
