Article Icon 1CPW Meets on Copper Creek Wolves

Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) commissioners held a special meeting Monday over the Copper Creek wolf pack, which has been tied to repeated livestock attacks in Pitkin County.

Despite ranchers’ calls to remove the pack, the commission said it won’t intervene directly, leaving those decisions to agency staff.

The Copper Creek Pack was first confirmed in June 2024, after two relocated Oregon wolves were spotted with pups—the first confirmed pack since reintroduction began. The pack was captured and held after multiple depredations, then re-released in January alongside 15 wolves from British Columbia. Since then, one yearling male was killed by CPW following more attacks.

Ranchers say their herds remain at risk, and they feel ignored. CPW’s latest annual report shows over $400,000 paid in wolf damage claims and more than $3 million spent on wolf management.

Survivors of the 2021 Marshall Fire met with lawmakers in Louisville on Monday, demanding reforms to what they call “insurance failures.”

Many say they were drastically underinsured and are still paying mortgages on homes they can’t afford to rebuild.

Colorado lawmakers, including Sen. Judy Amabile and Rep. Kyle Brown, have pushed for legislation to address these issues, such as a new law requiring insurers to factor in homeowners’ wildfire mitigation efforts when setting premiums.

Local officials and residents called for clearer policy information and stronger protections for policyholders. But lawmakers cautioned that too many restrictions could push insurers out of the state, leaving Colorado families with even fewer options.

Students at Colorado School of Mines developed a new assistive technology called HapWare, designed to help blind and visually impaired users interpret facial expressions through touch.

The system uses smart glasses to detect facial cues and a wristband to deliver haptic feedback. In early testing, users identified seven nonverbal social cues—such as smiles, raised eyebrows, and squinting—with 95% accuracy in under two minutes.

The project started as a student capstone and now includes alumni and advisor-turned-CTO Bryan Duarte, who is blind. The team aims to bring HapWare to market soon.
