Article Icon 1Bill to Curb Crypto ATM Scams

A bill awaiting Gov. Polis’ signature would impose new regulations on cryptocurrency ATMs in Colorado amid a wave of scams targeting seniors and low-income residents.

Senate Bill 79, backed by Sen. Janice Rich, introduces a $2,000 daily transaction cap for first-time users and mandates printed and electronic receipts, along with full refunds for first-time transactions deemed fraudulent if funds are sent to wallets outside the U.S.

Crypto ATMs—often found in gas stations, vape shops, and liquor stores in low-income neighborhoods—have been linked to a surge in financial crimes, with nationwide losses topping $110 million in 2023 and $65 million in the first half of 2024.

Advocates say the law is a crucial step to protect vulnerable Coloradans as crypto scams become increasingly common.

Article Icon 1Boulder Launches Hailstorm Study

With hail season well underway, a team of scientists is conducting a six-week study to better understand the costly and often dangerous storms.

Launched in Boulder last week, Project ICECHIP is a collaboration of 19 institutions, including CU Boulder and CSU. Its goal is to improve hail-detection technology and forecasting by observing the storms in real time using mobile radars, drones, and on-the-ground sensors.

The study’s results could be critical for hail-prone states like Colorado. In 2024 alone, the state reported $521 million in hail damage—the fourth-highest total nationwide.

By fine-tuning forecasting models, the ICECHIP team hopes to reduce that damage, saving untold millions for Coloradans and other “hail alley” residents.
