Article Icon 1Bill Aims to Increase Careless Driving Penalties

Bereaved families testified at the Capitol on Wednesday in support of Senate Bill 25-281, a measure to increase the penalties for careless driving that results in death or injury.

Currently, such offenses are classified as misdemeanors, carrying a maximum penalty of one year in jail and a $1,000 fine. The proposed bill would elevate it to a felony, tighten drug screening requirements, and allow for license suspensions.

Sponsors of the bill say it’s motivated by several recent road deaths, stressing the need for justice in preventable tragedies. Opponents raise concerns about potential legal complications and unintended consequences.

The measure awaits a vote by the Senate Judiciary Committee, which could take place April 21.

Nicholas Jordan, a man accused of fatally shooting two people at the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs (UCCS) last year, was found guilty of murder on Wednesday.

On Feb. 16, 2024, Jordan shot his roommate, Samuel Knopp, and Celie Montgomery in a UCCS dorm room. The shooting followed months of conflict that had led Knopp to file complaints against Jordan.

During the trial, the defense argued Jordan was acting in self defense. Prosecutors maintained that common sense refuted that theory.

Jordan was convicted of two counts of first-degree murder and one count of felony menacing. He received two consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole.

Article Icon 1Empty DIA Land to Become ‘Airport City’

Porteos—a commercial mixed-use development near Denver International Airport (DIA)—is continuing its expansion as part of a larger vision for an “airport city.”

Porteos’ industrial park is the closest private property to DIA. It hosts stores like Walmart, FedEx, and Costco, with additional spaces available for retail, restaurants, hotels, and more.

San Juan Co., the property’s managing agent, plans to expand onto an adjoining 528-acre lot. In the long term, developers are focused on creating a Colorado Aerotropolis—a city built around the airport.

Purchase of the new lot is expected to close later this year. Construction is slated to begin in 2026 or 2027 and could take up to 10 years.
